critics quotes 'I Wonder?' Coloured Pencil on Paper by Evelyn Hartogh 2000performance art media quotes

“Some years ago people strolling along Brisbane’s Queens Street Mall were startled to see Wonder Woman vacuuming the street.  The Sisyphean task was impossible even for WW – and that was the point performance artist Evelyn Hartogh was making: society’s expectations of Women are absurdly unrealistic.  Her career as a performance artist began 15 years ago and since then, the 35 year-old has presented shows at festivals, cabarets – and malls.  Comedy, satires and irony have been used for centuries to deliver serious messages about prejudice and injustice, and Hartogh draws on well-known figures from popular culture to undermine sexism, racism and homophobia. “My work is about trying to understand how we allow human rights to be violated on a day-to-day basis,” she explains.”

Melissa Giles LINK disability magazine 2007

“As Courier Mail photographer Rob Maccoll drove towards "Wonder Woman's West End headquarters" he knew exactly the picture he would take.  A weathered apartment block, cutting a clear hot sky and fronted by umbrella trees and airconditioning units, it would make the perfect backdrop for "just a true Queensland character".  The character was Brisbane entertainer Evelyn Hartogh decked out in her loud Wonder Woman costume.  Her photograph is the September illustration of the Courier Mail's Views of Queensland 2007 calendar.”

Calender honours a true local hero COURIER MAIL 2006

“Evelyn Hartogh gets severely lost in the translation and descends into a preachy soapbox piece that accuses the audience of being racist, sexist, homophobic bigots.  In a nutshell: A great idea that needs to return to the drawing board”

Dan Evans SCENE 2006

“She famously appeared in the Queen St Mall with a vacuum cleaner pledging to ‘clean up the city’ … Hartogh plays them all for laughs, as well as doing wicked impressions of the peripheral characters such as John Howard.  And she makes her own costumes.  She truly is a Wonder Woman”

Nick Bray THE COURIER MAIL 2006

“CRITICS PICKS: Dan Evans picks ‘Kick Kiss Kill’.  Wonder Woman, Barbie and Lillith all in one performance?  All facing a  postmodern existential crisis?  Hell yeah!  Why Not?  In an age of comic-book movie remakes, it’s about time some of these characters migrated to the boards.  Writer/ Performer Evelyn Hartogh gives us an altered perspective on some famous pop culutre [sic] icons that promises to be both comical and off the wall”

Dan Evans SCENE 2006

“Evelyn Hartogh will take to the stage as Wonder Woman as part of her one-woman show at this month’s Brisbane Festival but her enthusiasm for the comic-strip character goes well beyond the professional. … ‘I am a total comic nerd.  I spend more money on comics than I do on clothes’”

Andrew Fraser THE WEEKEND AUSTRALIAN 2006

“Wonder Woman will use comedy as a weapon against evil … the superhero, also known as performance artist Evelyn Hartogh will showcase her unique brand of political satire at Ladyfest”

Sue Gardiner CITY NEWS 2005

“Evelyn you’re all fucked up and full of shit.  Maybe I’m just coming down with a bug, but I felt physically sick reading your pseudo-intellectual, half-assed, femanazi bullshit.  Femanism [sic] should be about equal opportunity for women … that’s it.  Stop your insecent [sic] whining about humanity realising the differences between males and females.  While the rest of society get on with life, you’re left screaming at yourself about extremist doctrines of a radical, and permanently obsolete ideology.  God help you, coz you’ll explode with anger and hatred before any intelligent lifeform takes you seriously”

Nathan Brooks SEMPER 2001

“I’ve got nothing against the avante-garde [sic], nothing against groups of people united by their sexualities expressing themselves in unique ways, nothing against challenging notions of fixed genders through artistic mediums.  What I do dislike though is self-serving egotistical ‘artisties’ who are too busy shoving their noses up their own asses to notice the reeking stink of talentless crap”

Anonymous SEMPER 1999

“Considered a mentor by teenagers in her community and … the youngest person in the Creative Writing MA at the University of Queensland”

Miriam Lo WESTERLY 1998

“Not one you’d invite to drinks without first putting on your glitteriest thinking cap and undies – there’s a health mix of brains and left field dress sense in this girl, who has been in the Brisbane fringe media spotlight since her first performances in 1992. … Her scripts where the impromptu is secondary but used as vinegar on the tongue lashes, are written with the sort of intent that needs footnotes.”

Margaret Smithhurst SEMPER 1998

“A well-known figure on the Brisbane arts scene … she slices through the dominant paradigm with a rapier-like wit and an array of intriguing personae … [and] gleefully satirises contemporary constructs of femininity”

Meta Finnamore UTOPIA 1997

“If you dig the patriarchy and need a big fucken wake-up call. [SOLDOUT] is for you”

Ellen SEMPER 1997

“Cutting edge Brisbane performance artist Evelyn Hartogh …  [has] a way of making feminism, that dirty word, consumable.  SOLDOUT is a collection of scripts and photographs and performances since 1992. ‘People don’t realise all the photos in the book are of me and are saying: ‘Oh, you’re Barbie, I mixed you up with the person who did Wonder Woman’”

Nicola Robinson THE SUNDAY MAIL 1996

“Evelyn Harthogh [sic] stole the show”

Anonymous SEMPER 1995

“Evelyn Hartogh doesn’t believe art should be confined to gallery walls.  The 22-year-old New Farm performance artist dresses up as Wonder Woman and uses a vacuum cleaner prop to make a statement about women in the 90s”

Des Partridge THE COURIER MAIL 1994
