MORE FINE ART PORTRAITS
characters & stars1994-2003

Evelyn
Hartogh began creating fine art
portraits in 1992 at the same time she began her performance art practice. However, in 1995 a window
fell down on Evelyn’s right hand. Fortunately she was
wearing a large perspex ring at the time and, although the ring broke, it managed
to save her hand
from being cut
in half. The resulting injury was
enough to make her hand virtually immovable for almost five years because none of her
fingers would bend due to being so swollen.
Between 1995 and 2000 Evelyn was unable to write legibly or draw without
considerable pain. Nonetheless she
still managed to produce a prolific amount of essays, articles and creative
writing by typing with her left hand.
By 2000 she was able to bend the fingers of her right hand again and she
resumed creating fine art portraits.

BARBIE DOLLS 1994
Evelyn drew and painted a series of Barbie pictures while she
was writing and performing her first Barbie shows. These
works were never exhibited and many of them were lost or destroyed. These are two of the three surviving Barbie
pictures.
WONDER WOMEN 2000When Evelyn’s hand first recovered enough to be able to draw for
extended periods she began creating a series of Wonder Woman portraits in a range of mediums. As you can see the majority of pictures reproduced
on the Fine Art web pages are from this Wonder Woman collection. All of these works were done on paper and
are A3 sized. Evelyn plans to create
and exhibit larger oil painting versions of her favourite Wonder Woman
portraits.
DRAG KING 2001This
pencil sketch is an unfinished Drag King
sketch which requires inking. The hat
that is illustrated in the picture was Evelyn’s favourite olive corduroy
Stetson. Unfortunately, one day while
catching the ferry to university the wind caught her hat and blew it into the
river. Evelyn hestitated from getting
her feet wet and retrieving it, and it was lost forever. Next time she loses a hat to wind and water
she plans to risk a cold to save an irreplaceable lid.

ROCK STARS 2003
These inked sketches were used to illustrate an article Evelyn
wrote about Brisbane independent bands.
The illustrations are of: LEFT Julian Harris (Small
World Experience, The Lazy Ocean Glitters, The Look of Love, The
Golden Circles) who Evelyn became friends with at university in the early
1990s and then lived in share houses with during the mid to late 1990s. He is currently living in Melbourne with his
partner who is also a musician. RIGHT
Jason Bright (The Hooray Henries, Dragstar, The Lazy Ocean Glitters, Space
Cowboys) who is also a friend of Evelyn’s that she met during the 1990s. He lives in Brisbane and is a television
connoisseur.
