two Masters degrees,
one in Women’s Studies (Griffith University 1997) and the other in
Creative Writing (University of Queensland 2002). Her art practice involves articles

Since
1992 Evelyn Hartogh has performed hundreds of shows at galleries events and venues
including Brisbane Festival Theatre Fringe, Ladyfest,
International Womens Day, Amnesty Freedom Festival, Valley Fiesta, Venus Rising,
SOOB, Qld Poetry Festival, Brisbane GLBT Pride Festival’s ‘Art Love Jam
Cabaret’, La Boite’s ‘Shock of the New Festival’, Blue Stocking Week, Queer
Collaborations, 4ZZZ Market Day, and The Brisbane Writers Fringe Festival and
galleries such as
Isn’t Studios, Boulder Lodge, Bartleme Galleries, Bauhaus Gallery, UQ Art
Museum, and Fox Galleries.
Evelyn has been writing for Queensland
Pride Newspaper since 2000 when she began her long running column Pop
Cult Sheroes. She has been
involved in queer politics in Queensland since 1989 in her undergraduate days
at the University of Queensland when she made badges which said “Bisexuality
– Piss everyone off”. She
campaigned for gay law reform while at university and participated in the
Freedom of Choice rallies in the early 1990s.
Between 1998 and 2001 she organised the Brisbane GLBTI Pride
Festival queer cabaret Art Love Jam that sought to combat
youth suicide by offering an accepting environment for emerging and established
queer and queer-friendly performers. In
2006, after fifteen years of performing her original scripts in Brisbane
venues, she debuted her first one-woman show, the full length play Kick
Kiss Kill, at the 2006 Brisbane Festival Theatre Fringe. Despite being clear in her publicity that
all her work is concerned with human rights, and she has two Masters Degrees
(in Women’s Studies and Creative Writing), she was slammed by critics as being
too political and academic. Kick Kiss Kill clips can be seen at Evelyn Hartogh’s Myspace Video
Pages. She continues to publish and perform as
a freelance independent artist and her website is www.empressev.net
